Green Roofing

Green roofing, also known as 'green roofs', 'vegetative roofs’, ‘living roofs’, ‘eco-roofs’ and 'sedum roofs' are roofing systems where living plants are installed on top of conventional roofs. A green roof can keep your buildings cooler, save energy, enhance the useful life of the roof, and add beauty and useable space.

Modern green roofs. Modern green roofing supports a natural ecosystem and provide the greatest benefit in urban areas and in large industrial or commercial sites where impervious surfaces dominate. Our green roofing systems typically consist of a waterproof roof coating, a layer of soil and a drainage layer. Green roof plants are then planted which will quickly cover the soil and prevent erosion, retain rainwater, and provide insulation and respirative cooling.

Types of green roofing. There are generally 2 types of green roofing, extensive green roofs and intensive green roofs. Extensive green roofs are characterized by the shallower growing medium which is a combination of light weight organic and inorganic materials. The growth media will vary between 2-6" for extensive green roofing. Intensive green roofs have a growth media depth somewhere between 8-24", much deeper than that of an extensive green roof.

Green roofing layers. Our green roofing systems consist of a series of components that are installed in layers on a roof surface. The particular components chosen depend on the complexity of the green roofing system and environment in which the roof is to be installed.
